WEHDC believes that community development begins with youth empowerment. In 2009, WEHDC implemented the youth-based hip hop program, “Fulfill the Dream” in part of our Summer Sweeps summer youth program. Founder and creator of Fulfill the Dream, Roberto Riviera began this program with the message of hope at the foundation, focusing on preventing violence, high school drop out rate, murder rates and incarceration rate within the youth for ages 8 to 18 years.
Currently, WEHDC runs Fulfill The Dream at Asa Messer and Gilbert Stuart Elementary Schools in their after school programming. A total of 41 students have participated since its launch in 2015.
The Fulfill the Dream program:
- Identifies and utilizes opportunities within the community to empower and equip youth with viable tools of learning and employment training.
- Encourage youth to use leadership skills to establish goals, increase academic achievement and social responsibility.
- Engage youth with empirically proven principles of empowerment that is directed towards the development of leadership, relationship, and citizenship skills.
- Enhance behavioral climate in youth and build strong relationships with communities.
